The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino from Tenuta Poggio di Sotto was born in 1989, located on the south-eastern slope of the Montalcino hill, an area renowned for the quality of its Sangiovese. The estate covers 44 hectares, of which 16 are dedicated to vineyards registered in the Brunello di Montalcino Register. The remaining hectares are cultivated with olive groves, with 1,400 plants, and woods. The vineyards extend over slopes ranging from 200 to 400 meters above sea level. Protected by Mount Amiata and cooled by sea breezes and the Orcia River, the estate enjoys a unique microclimate with strong temperature variations even in summer. The hilly lands with 10% slopes are cultivated with spurred cordon, with a low yield of 30-35 quintals per hectare thanks to a rigorous selection of the grapes. Only the best bunches remain on the plants until harvest, with further selections at harvest time. The company operates according to the principles of organic cultivation certified by ICEA. Brunello di Montalcino is produced with vineyards located between 200 and 450 meters above sea level, on poor but rocky soils, in the Castelnuovo dell’Abate area, along the Orcia river valley. The harvest is manual and takes place at the end of September, with a yield of 30-35 quintals per hectare. The grapes undergo a double selection, in the vineyard and in the cellar, where they are spontaneously fermented in wooden vats with long macerations and pumping over in the open air. The wine ages for 48 months in 30 hl oak barrels and for another 8 months in the bottle, without being filtered before bottling. The result is a dark ruby colored wine, with elegant and complex aromas. On the palate, it is austere and structured, with the potential to evolve for several decades. Perfect with roast red meats, braised meats, game and mature cheeses.
